kris rowley

Vermont State's Chief Information Security Officer, Kris Rowley, MSIA, who is a Norwich graduate, will discuss the implications of cybercrime from a government perspective. Kris Rowley has been CISO for Vermont sinc 2008. Prior to working for the state she was employed with Norwich University in Northfield, Vermont. At Norwich she worked with the CISO, Dr Peter R. Stephenson, to develop and write University security policies. She also worked for the School of Graduate Studies as an Administrative Director.

parag pruthiNIKSUN Founder and CEO, Parag Pruthi, PhD, will discuss network forensics. Dr. Parag Pruthi founded Niksun, Inc. and serves as its Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. Prior to that, Dr. Pruthi was at Bellcore, Telcordia and other research institutions. In his prior career, he was instrumental in developing leading edge tools for large-scale collection and analysis of data from production carrier and enterprise networks. His expertise stems from solving important problems in security, telephony, broadband and wireless network management. Dr. Pruthi holds a Bachelor's in Electrical Engineering and a Master's in Computer Science from Stevens Institute of Technology, and a Doctorate in Telecommunications from The Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm, Sweden. His thesis was titled "An Application of Chaotic Maps to Packet Traffic Modeling" which was the first thesis in applying chaotic and fractal or self-similar systems to accurately model the seemingly erratic nature of network traffic.

Dr Peter Stephenson, PhD, VSM, CISSP, CISM, FICAF, Associate Prof of Cyber Investigation and Director of the Norwich University Center for Advanced Computing and Digital Forensics will present a "romance scam" case currently under investigation in Toledo, Ohio.  Dubbed the "Facebook Faker" by the media, this scammer has escalated his scam from cyber space to the real world and has reached the point of forcible rape and assault of his victims.  Unlike romance scams that are conducted from Europe and Africa, where the scammers rarely meet their victims face-to-face this scammer actively seeks out his victims and arranges meetings, sometimes with dire consequences.  Dr. Stephenson is analyzing this case as part of his ongoing research in cyber criminology and criminalistics.
